Overview
Microsoft Xbox wanted to better understand how gamers perceive AI, from its use in game development to features across gaming platforms. Our research explored the concerns, expectations, and emotions shaping those reactions through social listening.
My role
As part of a seven-person Carnegie Mellon research team partnering with Microsoft Xbox, I served as Lead UX Researcher. I investigated how gamer reactions differed between in-game and platform-level AI, while collaborating with our Product Manager to coordinate research priorities, divide responsibilities, and communicate findings to Xbox stakeholders.
Research Approach
Looking beyond sentiment to understand the conversation
I combined competitive landscape research, quantitative social listening, and qualitative analysis to understand how players perceived AI in gaming and what shaped those reactions.
These readings of public conversations are interpretive, not statistically representative.
Landscape analysis
Reviewed Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo alongside Xbox leadership developments, industry news, and public reactions to establish context.

Research Evolution
How stakeholder feedback changed our research approach
We moved from measuring gamer sentiment to investigating the concerns driving those reactions.
Before
Measuring reactions
Tracked sentiment, conversation trends, and audience patterns using Brandwatch.
Turning point
Stakeholder feedback
Microsoft Xbox researchers and CMU faculty encouraged us to move beyond sentiment scores and identify actionable insights.
After
Understanding the reasons
Investigated posts behind conversation spikes to uncover concerns about creativity, game quality, trust, and affordability.
Key Findings
Four concerns emerged from conversations about AI in gaming.
Creative ownership
Players worried AI-generated content could replace human creativity.
Game quality
Players questioned whether AI performance tools compromised game quality.
Platform trust
Users expressed frustration with automated decisions they couldn’t understand or challenge.
Affordability
Players associated AI’s hardware demands with rising gaming costs.
01
Creative AI raised concerns about human authorship
When players discovered AI-generated artwork in Crimson Desert, conversations focused on image quality, disclosure, and the perceived replacement of human creative effort.

Player conversations
Player conversations about AI-generated artwork, disclosure, and human creative work.
Insight Creative AI triggered backlash when players perceived a loss of human authorship, quality, or transparency.
02
AI performance tools raised concerns about game quality
DLSS is an NVIDIA technology that uses AI to help games run more smoothly by generating or enhancing frames. While intended to improve performance, some gamers questioned whether developers might rely on it instead of optimizing their games.
Twitter/X
Questions about DLSS visual quality.
Concern that developers might rely on DLSS instead of optimizing the game.
Insight Players weren’t necessarily opposed to AI improving performance. They questioned whether it was being used to enhance games or compensate for lower-quality development.
03
Platform AI eroded trust when users lacked control
In conversations about AI-powered moderation and recommendations on platforms such as YouTube and X, users expressed frustration with unexplained decisions, inconsistent enforcement, and limited ways to intervene.
These examples come from adjacent platforms, not Xbox-specific incidents, and informed potential design considerations for Xbox.
Automated decisions without reliable human review
Limited control over recommended content
Insight Users were especially concerned when automated systems made consequential decisions they couldn’t understand, control, or challenge.
04
AI became associated with rising gaming costs
Some players linked AI’s growing demand for computing hardware to rising console and component prices. Their conversations revealed concerns about gaming becoming less affordable and accessible.
“AI ruined my favorite hobby—I can’t afford a PS5 anymore.”
Conversation themes around gaming affordability
Player-reported shift from Xbox to PC after price increases · YouTube, March 2026
Insight AI’s perceived impact on hardware prices shifted the conversation from innovation to accessibility.
Gamers don’t just react to AI. They react to what they believe it threatens.
Creative AI
Concerns about human authorship and creative integrity drove backlash.
Performance AI
Questions about game quality and developer effort fueled skepticism.
Platform AI
Limited transparency and control undermined trust.
AI and infrastructure
Perceived effects on gaming costs raised affordability concerns.
Strategic Recommendations
Turning research insights into opportunities for Xbox
These are research-informed opportunities from our presentation to Xbox. They were not implemented, and we did not track product outcomes.
- 01
Protect human creativity
Creative AI raised concerns about authorship and quality. Position AI as supporting developers, with transparency around generated content.
- 02
Demonstrate clear player benefits
Performance AI looked like a shortcut to some players. Communicate concrete player benefits rather than selling AI itself.
- 03
Make platform AI understandable and controllable
Platform AI raised concerns about invisible decisions. Prioritize explanations, user controls, and human review.
- 04
Consider broader perceptions of access
Some players associated AI with reduced affordability. Be mindful of how AI investments are framed in relation to player value and access.
Impact
Invited to present our research to a broader Microsoft audience
Our team presented our AI in Gaming findings to Microsoft Xbox Senior Research Managers Josh Rivers and Melissa MacGregor. Our analysis was well received, particularly the finding connecting perceptions of AI with concerns about gaming affordability.
Following the course, we were invited to share our research with a broader audience of Microsoft researchers through an additional virtual presentation.
What I learned
Good research goes beyond the numbers.
This project strengthened my ability to use Brandwatch, construct targeted search queries, interpret quantitative signals, and investigate the qualitative context behind them. More importantly, I learned how to adapt my research approach based on stakeholder feedback to produce more meaningful, actionable insights.
Got hands on and played with the team on Xbox.
Minecraft keepsakes from the project.
